Nestled in Oria on the shores of Lake Lugano, just a few minutes from our Resort by car or bus, Villa Fogazzaro Roi was a cherished retreat of the writer Antonio Fogazzaro. Here, he wrote and set his famous novel Piccolo mondo antico (1896).
The residence has preserved its unique literary atmosphere, from the writer’s study with his personal memorabilia and the library to the drawing room, dining room, frescoed gallery and boathouse. A hanging garden overlooking Lake Lugano completes the setting, beautifully combining nature and history.
In 2009, thanks to the generosity of Marquis Giuseppe Roi, Antonio Fogazzaro’s great-grandson, the villa was entrusted to FAI – the National Trust for Italy. Today, Villa Fogazzaro Roi offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century bourgeois life and the world of Italian literature.
